Once again, SAMHSA Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reminds us September is National Recovery Month. This national observance is held every year to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can encourage those with a mental and/or substance use disorder to live a healthy and rewarding life.
This year’s theme is, Join the Voices for Recovery: Strengthen Families and Communities.
SAMHSA’s hope-filled message is for all of us to recognize, admit, and reach out to those suffering from addiction and mental health disorders.
This year in particular, when we face a national opioid epidemic it is critical that we step up to support others to respect themselves enough to take the life-saving steps to recovery.
For me, that means following the wisdom of the 12-Step Program and in particular —
Step 12, Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
