Do you find yourself asking the question, how did I get here?
If, like me, you thought you had all the answers to help a loved one face their shortcomings is one of the ways you got there.
When we bring ourselves down trying to lift someone up, is the classical descending spiral enablers like us took to get where we are.
When we tell ourselves we know how to fix -a.k.a.- control a significant other, we are putting denial on hold.
Only thing wrong with that reasoning is denial doesn’t respect “on hold” boundaries. Putting denial on hold gives it a place of prominence. The only place it deserves is an in-your-face acknowledgment of how deceitful denial is.
If we want to set our spirits free, we can begin by accepting that the only person we can change is ourselves.
Hi, my name is Diane, and I am a co-addict.
Now that’s telling it like it is.
“If you stick with this, living out what I tell you, you are my disciples for sure. Then you will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you” John 8:23 (MSG).
