Whenever I heard Lennie Briscoe—the recovering alcoholic detective of Law & Order fame ask a witness or suspect, “Oh, so you’re a friend of Bill?” a slight grin would cross my face. Having spent years in the Al-Anon 12-Step program, I immediately recognized the not-so-hidden reference: “Are you a friend of Bill W?”

In the television series, this reflected Briscoe’s commitment to honoring the sacred anonymity of Alcoholics Anonymous.

And to think it all began on June 10, 1935, when Dr. Bob had his last drink. On that day, he and Bill W. embarked on a journey that would provide the first step toward healing for millions suffering from addiction.

Alcoholics Anonymous Founders’ Day (Wednesday, June 10th, 2026)

Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith are widely recognized as the co-founders of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Their pioneering 12-step program has supported countless individuals in achieving lasting sobriety and reclaiming their lives. As a guiding principle within the fellowship suggests: “Keep coming back—it works if you work it, because you’re worth it.”

So—join the company of good men and women, keep your feet on the tried-and-true paths. It’s the men who walk straight who will settle this land, the women with integrity who will last here (Proverbs 2:20-21 MSG).
