It pains me deeply when I read the following ignorant statement for U. S. Senator Kevin Cramer who said that he wants President-elect Trump’s pick for Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, to stop drinking as reports mount that the former Fox News host has previously done so excessively.

The senator continues with his wish, “One of the things I’d love to hear is that he’s committed to not drinking,” Cramer told CNN on Wednesday. “Being familiar with the problems of alcoholism and the dumb things we do when we drink too much, it’d be really nice if he could set that one aside for good, if not at least through his term as secretary.” GOP senator wants Hegseth to commit to not drinking

And Senator Cramer what I and countless others think it’d be really nice is if our families weren’t ripped apart by addiction. If thousands of young adults didn’t overdose, if addicts didn’t drink, drive, kill innocent bystanders – – –

Does the senator think that setting “that one aside . . . if not at least through his term as secretary,” is like giving up ice cream for Lent? Not even close.

Senator, the addict isn’t going to change because we think it’d be really nice. The change will come when the addict is ready to admit their life is unmanageable. Then takes the next step to seek and believe in a Higher Power. With professional help and the support of a 12-step group, we can find our way back to a somewhat saner way of life. One day at a time.
