From early childhood, I was blessed to live with a praying grandfather and mother. Without ceasing they prayed believing.

One night when my 82-year-old Mom was visiting, I went into the guestroom to say goodnight. To my surprise, I found her praying—on her knees. Really? At 82, she still knelt to pray! I was both astonished and embarrassed. I am not sure why, but kneeling to say my prayers was a practice I had stopped years earlier.

Similarly, in all the years I’ve been working the 12-Step program, I am amazed to discover when I revert back to my controlling behaviors it’s because I am not praying for knowledge of His will to be done. Instead, I manipulate my prayers to be what I want my life to be–not God’s will.

I am pretty sure that is not what the 11th Step is all about.

What about you, does your conscious contact with God give you the insight to pray for His knowledge, or are you banking on your own will to get you through each day?

Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry it out.
