On this International Overdose Awareness Day, I must admit I didn’t understand the dysfunctional drama played out in addiction and co-addiction.

For instance, are you aware that some addicts drink, use, or sadly overdose to fight off loneliness?

Equally destructive is when co-addicts, including me, wear a mask of togetherness when we’d much rather isolate to avoid the shame and stigma of the family secret.

Thank God for 12-step support groups who gently welcome us into a community of safety by advocating a healthy awareness of the truth behind the “dis”ease of addiction.

You’re not alone, I’m not alone, Trust me – Trust your Higher Power – Trust God – together we can do this!

Even when the way goes through Death Valley, I’m not afraid when you walk at my side. Your trusty shepherd’s crook makes me feel secure (Psalm 23:4 MSG).
